📖 “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12
There are many titles Jesus gives Himself, but few are as tender, as hopeful, or as necessary as this: “I am the light of the world.”
Darkness is real. It blinds, confuses, disorients, discourages, and at times overwhelms. But into a world filled with shadows, Jesus steps forward and declares with divine authority and human compassion, “I am the light.”
He does not simply shine light.
He is the light.
Light is His nature, His mission, and His gift to those who follow Him.
This is why I love Jesus. He brings light to my darkness, and His light changes everything.
1️⃣ His light reveals truth💡📖
Darkness hides. Light reveals.
Darkness distorts. Light clarifies.
Darkness creates fear. Light brings understanding.
When Jesus calls Himself the light of the world, He is saying that He alone reveals reality as it truly is:
• God as He is
• ourselves as we truly are
• life as it was meant to be
Philip Yancey writes that grace opens our eyes to see both our need and God’s mercy. Jesus’ light exposes the illusions we cling to and guides us into truth. Eldredge adds that Jesus brings clarity because He is stunningly honest and utterly real. There is no pretense in Him.
Before Christ, many questions lingered like shadows:
Who am I?
Why am I here?
What is my purpose?
How do I make sense of my weaknesses and wounds?
In Jesus, those questions found answers. He is not a dim torch in a dark room. He is the sunrise of the soul.
I love Jesus because His light reveals truth.
2️⃣ His light overcomes darkness. 🌅✨
John writes, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:5)
Light does not struggle against darkness. It displaces it. Even the smallest spark pushes back the night. And Jesus is no small spark. He is the blazing, unstoppable light of God.
Sproul reminds us that Christ did not come merely to comfort us. He came to conquer sin, break chains, silence the accuser, and defeat the powers of darkness. His light is victorious.
There were seasons in my life and ministry when uncertainty felt overwhelming, when responsibility pressed heavily, or when discouragement lingered. Yet in Scripture, prayer, worship, conversations, and even in the quiet moments of journaling, the light of Christ broke through gently but powerfully.
The circumstances did not always change immediately, but I did.
The darkness did not disappear at once, but His light pushed it back step by step.
I love Jesus because His light always wins.
3️⃣ His light guides my steps🚶🏽♂️🕯️
David wrote, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105)
Jesus does not only shine on our past or our future. He lights the next step. Following Him does not guarantee understanding the whole journey, but it does guarantee never walking alone.
This has been true in every season, especially during times of transition when decisions about ministry needed to be made and the way forward was not always clear. Yet whenever I paused to seek Christ, His light guided me. A Scripture, a conversation, a closed door, or a surprising confirmation would reveal the next step.
I love Jesus because He guides my steps faithfully.
🕊️🔆A personal testimony: His light in my decision to enter ministry.
One of the toughest decisions I had to make early in life came when I sensed a calling to full time Christian ministry. I had just returned from studies in the United Kingdom and had been promoted to a senior government position in a European Union funded project. To complicate matters, I had two salaries because I was also seconded to an international organization to do research.
Now I had to convince my boss that I was not leaving for greener pastures, which was not difficult as my salary at FOCUS Kenya as General Secretary would be half of what I was earning. My family responded with disbelief. They thought something had gone wrong with their otherwise progressive and intelligent son and sibling.
I faced darkness in the form of uncertainty, confusion, fear of the future, and the pressure of expectations. But in that darkness, Jesus gave light. Step by step, He clarified my calling. His peace overshadowed my fears. His presence steadied my heart. And His voice guided my decision.
Looking back, I can only say this:
His light did not fail me. It never has.
4️⃣ His light brings hope. 🌟🙏
The world’s darkness is real, but Jesus’ light is stronger. His light brings:
• forgiveness to guilt
• comfort to sorrow
• direction to confusion
• freedom to sin
• resurrection hope in the face of death
Sproul reminds us that the resurrection is God’s declaration that light has triumphed forever. Yancey says grace flows downward into our darkest places. Eldredge says Jesus brings a fierce, life-giving joy that darkness cannot extinguish.
I love Jesus because His light fills my life with hope, confidence, and peace.
My Worship Response 🎶🙌
Today’s worship theme begins with the hymn “The Light of the World Is Jesus,” whose refrain reflects my story: “Sweetly the light has dawned upon me.” His light continues to dawn on me each day.
“Rescue” by Lauren Daigle reminds me that His light seeks me personally, reaching into my need with unwavering love.
And in “Enda Nasi” by Reuben Kigame, the prayer “Walk with us, Lord” captures my desire to remain in the light He provides
Reason #3 Why I Love Jesus:
✨ He brings light to my darkness
By revealing truth, overcoming fear, guiding my steps, and filling my heart with hope.
