📖 “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” John 1:5
Darkness presses hard against the human heart. It takes many forms, fear, confusion, grief, and the quiet heaviness that settles when hope feels thin. But John begins his Gospel with a bold, unyielding declaration. The Light has come, and darkness has not overcome it.
Christ does not negotiate with darkness or retreat from it. He shines. And darkness, for all its force, cannot extinguish Him.
This is why I love Jesus.
❤️ His light conquers darkness.
1️⃣ I love Jesus because His light shines where darkness once ruled.
From the opening words of Scripture, light is the first gift God speaks into creation. In the incarnation, God again speaks light into a dark world. Jesus does not dispel darkness by avoiding it. He enters it. He walks into it. He shines within it.
C. S. Lewis described the Christian faith as the light by which he saw everything else. He said it was not only true, but illuminating. That is what Jesus does. His presence brings clarity where confusion lived, hope where despair whispered, and direction where uncertainty clouded the way.
The light of Christ remains steady and trustworthy when understanding is limited.
I love Jesus because His light gives me vision and hope.
2️⃣ I love Jesus because His light exposes truth and heals the heart.
Darkness often hides what needs to be healed. It hides fears, insecurities, and unspoken burdens. But the light of Jesus does not expose to shame. It exposes to heal. He reveals truth so that freedom can follow.
John writes that Jesus came full of grace and truth. Grace opens the door. Truth transforms the soul. Together they bring the healing that darkness once prevented.
Walking in Christ’s light brings transformation not through condemnation, but through grace-filled truth.
I love Jesus because His light heals what darkness hides.
3️⃣ I love Jesus because His light protects me in the storms.
One of the most powerful declarations in Scripture comes from Psalm 46, a psalm I have returned to many times: “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”
Shane and Shane’s version captures the intensity and solace of that truth. Even when mountains shake and waters roar, the light of God remains unshaken.
Trouble may surround, but His presence surrounds more. The light of Christ steadies the heart when answers are slow and the path unclear.
I love Jesus because His light is stronger than every storm.
4️⃣ I love Jesus because His light reaches into my personal darkness.
Not all darkness is external. Some darkness forms inside the heart, sometimes quietly and without warning. Discouragement. Fatigue. Worry. The weight of responsibility. The ache of unmet longing. The shadow of regret. Yet even here, the light of Jesus shines.
He has often met me in prayer when I had no words. He has met me in silence, when clarity slowly emerged. He has comforted me through Scripture when a single verse awakened hope. He has realigned my soul when His truth confronted distorted thinking.
Henri Nouwen wrote that God often comes to us in the silence, not to frighten us but to call us by name. The light of Christ does its deepest work quietly, steadily, lovingly.
I love Jesus because His light enters the hidden places with gentleness and power.
5️⃣ I love Jesus because His light assures me that darkness will not have the final word.
John 1:5 does not say darkness will never appear. It says darkness will never overcome the light. This is the hope of Christmas, the hope of the Gospel, and the hope of every believer. The world may grow darker, but Christ remains the Light that no darkness can extinguish.
John Stott reminds us that the light of Christ is not fragile; it is decisive, exposing evil and securing hope. It assures me that God is at work even in uncertain times. It gives confidence that His purposes will prevail. It reminds me that my story, and the story of God’s people, ends not in shadow but in glory.
Steve Crown’s “You Are Great” captures this with the declaration that God’s power and majesty stand above every challenge. His greatness guarantees that light will triumph.
I love Jesus because His light writes the final chapter.
