📖 “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” John 8:36
Freedom is one of the deepest longings of every human heart. One of the most liberating discoveries in knowing Jesus has been the lightness of spirit that comes from forgiven sin. Like a caged bird released, the soul is set free to rise, to soar on wings like eagles. We long for freedom from fear, from guilt, from past wounds, from destructive habits, and from the quiet pressures that weigh us down. Yet many freedoms the world offers prove temporary or deceptive. Real freedom comes from one place alone.
This is why I love Jesus.
❤️ He sets me free.
1️⃣ I love Jesus because He frees me from the power of sin.
Sin is not only an act. It is a power that enslaves. It promises pleasure but produces bondage. It whispers comfort but brings captivity. Jesus speaks directly to this reality when He says,
“Everyone who sins is a slave to sin.”
But He does not stop there. He goes on to declare,
“If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
Jesus breaks the chains that sin wraps around the mind, emotions, and will. He frees us from patterns we could not escape on our own. His forgiveness removes guilt, and His power breaks bondage.
In Mere Christianity, C. S. Lewis explains that sin works like an addiction. Each small compromise strengthens its grip, until the will itself feels weakened. He argues that self effort alone cannot undo this bondage. Only when a person yields fully to Christ does the process of true freedom begin. What once felt impossible gradually loosens, as a deeper power replaces the tyranny of sin with new life.
I love Jesus because His freedom goes deeper than my effort or willpower.
2️⃣ I love Jesus because He frees me from guilt and shame.
Guilt says, “You did wrong.”
Shame says, “You are wrong.”
Both destroy confidence, shrink identity, and cloud our relationship with God. Jesus frees us from both.
Paul writes,
“There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” (Romans 8:1)
Not less condemnation.
None.
This truth has lifted many heavy burdens from my heart over the years. In moments when I felt inadequate or when mistakes from the past resurfaced, the Lord reminded me that guilt and shame have no authority over a forgiven child of God. He restores dignity. He restores identity. He restores joy.
I love Jesus because He frees me from what once imprisoned my heart.
3️⃣ I love Jesus because He frees me from fear.
Fear is one of the most common prisons in the human experience.
Fear of failure.
Fear of rejection.
Fear of the future.
Fear of loss.
Fear of inadequacy.
Jesus repeatedly said, “Do not be afraid.” He understood how powerful fear can be. Yet His presence casts out fear. His promises silence fear. His love disarms fear.
John writes,
“Perfect love drives out fear.”
In seasons of transition, leadership pressure, or personal concern, I have seen Jesus quiet my fears and strengthen my faith. He did not simply remove the challenge. He filled my heart with courage.
I love Jesus because His freedom replaces fear with confidence.
4️⃣ I love Jesus because He frees me from the weight of expectations.
Many people live under invisible pressure.
The pressure to perform.
The pressure to please.
The pressure to meet every demand.
The pressure to appear strong.
The pressure to never fail.
Jesus frees us from this burden.
He invites us to rest in His grace rather than strive in our own strength.
His words are simple and liberating,
“Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
In The Message, Jesus deepens this invitation, calling us to “learn the unforced rhythms of grace.” He does not offer escape from responsibility, but a new way of carrying it. Life with Him is not driven by pressure or fear, but shaped by trust, humility, and dependence. As we walk with Jesus, we learn to lay down false expectations and live from grace rather than performance.
I love Jesus because He frees me from unrealistic expectations.
5️⃣ I love Jesus because He frees me to become who God created me to be.
Freedom in Christ is not only the removal of chains. It is the release into purpose.
Galatians 5:1 says,
“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.”
He frees us so that we can grow, serve, lead, love, worship, and flourish in the life God designed for us.
In The Divine Conspiracy, Dallas Willard describes freedom in Christ as life under the easy yoke of Jesus. He argues that discipleship is learning to live as Jesus would live our lives, in our place. As we apprentice ourselves to Him, our inner world is slowly reformed. Freedom is not the absence of demands, but the presence of grace that enables us to act, love, serve, and lead with increasing peace and confidence.
Looking back, I see how Jesus used various seasons to free me from limitations I once accepted. He stretched my vision, strengthened my faith, and expanded my capacity to serve others. His freedom opened doors I could never have opened myself.
I love Jesus because His freedom is not only about breaking chains. It is about releasing destiny.
🎵 My Worship Response
Today’s worship song is “Break Every Chain” by Tasha Cobbs Leonard.
“There is power in the name of Jesus to break every chain.”
This is not poetic language. It is a spiritual reality grounded in the authority of Christ.
Alongside it, “Victory Belongs to Jesus” by Nikki Laoye declares that the battle has already been won. Freedom is not something we achieve, but something we receive, because Christ’s victory becomes our own.
The hymn “Amazing Grace” anchors this freedom in gratitude and humility. Once bound, now free. Once lost, now found. Grace does not only remove chains; it teaches us how to live free.
🙏 Lord Jesus, thank You for setting me free. Break every chain that hinders my walk with You. Lift every burden. Remove every fear. Fill my heart with Your freedom and lead me into the fullness of Your purpose.
